The Carnival of Viareggio is one of the most beloved of all Italian festivals. Founded in 1873 it is the largest parade of papier-mâché figures in the world.
The idea of creating a carnival was cooked up by a group of young people at the famous Caffè del Casinò, and every year the floats continue to process along the sea-front promenade.
2001 saw the creation of a Carnival Citadel, an amazing architectural complex devoted to creating and conserving the Viareggio Carnival.
The giant allegorical floats, often in animated forms, are worked on year-round by teams of professionals, experts and volunteers inspired by current events, often with a good dose of humour and irony. Every weekend in February the floats process through the crowds of children and adults dressed in carnival costumes, throwing confetti, streamers, dancing to music.
It’s a truly unforgettable festival for all those who want to celebrate Carnival as only Viareggio can: in style!
