Just an hour’s drive from Forte dei Marmi is the Garfagnana region, an area known for its unspoilt nature and tiny villages just waiting to be discovered. Its history dominated first by the Malaspina and then the Este dynasties, you can trace the heritage of castles, fortresses and old churches. The Garfagnana is a magical place, known as the “green island” of Tuscany thanks to its lush greenery. A proud and little-discovered area, it boasts some incredible geological features, like the Botri Ravine, the Canyon of Tuscany created by water flowing through this narrow gorge. Or the Grotta del Vento which features stalactites and stalagmites, polychrome flows, crystal-brimmed lakes, underground streams and strange eroded forms.
